Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station

Niagara County, NY is a spectacularly beautiful place famous for its natural treasures, hills and greenery. But the county’s economy has become anything but a thing of beauty, with de-industrialization leaving the community saddled with a high unemployment rate and increasingly dependent on an outlet center, a call center and gambling to generate jobs.

Then, something really bad happened. The Department of Defense announced as part of its Base Realignment and Closure process that the Niagara

Falls Air Reserve Station (NFARS) would close. Our research determined that the community would lose 8.5 percent of its payroll and 3.5 percent of its jobs were the base to be shuttered.

On behalf of the State of New York, SPG quantified and described the economic impacts that Niagara County would experience were the base to close. Thanks to this research and the work of other consultants, the BRAC Commission reversed its decision, and NFARS survives and continues to work to secure the homeland.
