Washington County, Maryland Public Schools

Washington County has traditionally been viewed as part of Western Maryland. But with both the Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas expanding rapidly in recent years, Washington County has become increasingly urban and suburban, as in-migrants from proximate metropolitan areas increasingly look to Washington County to provide workforce-priced housing.

On behalf of Washington County Public Schools, SPG provided a 90-minute presentation in June 2006 on the evolving economics and demographics of the County, with an eye toward helping educators understand the changing expectations of the County’s population, its emerging demographic structures, and its emerging challenges. Issues of particular concern include the ongoing lack of American student performance in math and science, the growing prevalence of English as a second language and the differential expectations between longtime Washington County residents and the newcomers from the west and south.
